Light Rail Transit (LRT) & Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for the City of Addis Ababa.
In the last few years, the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport in collaboration with other key stakeholders has been working to build LRT and BRT systems in order to alleviate the transportation problems of the City of Addis Ababa by developing an efficient, affordable and easily accessible Public Transportation System (PTS) for the public. The Light Rail and BRT will also help minimize traffic congestion and accidents in particular on pedestrians in the streets of Addis Ababa, when deployed. ITS technologies and systems will inevitably play a vital role in the operations and management of these systems including on scheduling, dispatching, traveler information, security, safety and fare collections.
The LRT project in particular is well underway. 100% Design of the system is completed and construction is initiated. A study has also been completed for the city’s BRT system and a pilot project is planned.
